Physiotherapy and Sports

B.C. physios (and physios from across the country) are volunteering to help out at the games in a variety of roles.  Physiotherapists working as physiotherapists  for the games hold the designation “Sport Physiotherapist” and  are members of Sport Physiotherapy Canada. This blog does not represent Sport Physiotherapy Canada directly , however many PABC members hold the designation. While this blog was set up to showcase our  B.C. physios at the games,  we recognize that sport physios have come from across Canada to volunteer. We welcome and encourage you to read, contribute, and comment on anything posted to the blog.

The follow briefly outlines the role of physiotherapy in sport.

What is sport physiotherapy?
Physiotherapists are trained to treat sports injuries. The Physiotherapy Association of B.C . (PABC) defines sports physiotherapy as

“Sprains, strains, ligament tears and other athletic injuries are a factor in most sports. Physiotherapy benefits from sport specific exercise; taping, bracing, ultrasound, and icing ensure professional and casual athletes stay in the game without risking more injury.”

What is the difference between a physiotherapist treating sports injuries and a credentialed “sport physiotherapist”?
Physiotherapists are trained to treat sport injuries, however physiotherapists can take additional certification to obtain credentials as  “Sport Physiotherapist”.  According to Sport Physiotherapy Canada  “A certified sport physiotherapist will have demonstrated competence in working independently at an athletic event and will have sufficient knowledge and experience to attend to injuries and needs that may occur”.

Sport Physiotherapy Canada (SPC) has been providing quality physiotherapy care to Canada’s athletes since 1972. SPC physiotherapists provide coverage for National and Provincial Events like the Canada Summer/Winter Games and for international events such as the: Olympic Summer and Winter, Commonwealth, World University, Pan American, and Francophone Games.

Canadian Sport Physiotherapists  are active in the
Vancouver2010 games.
